Strike Banners Make Waves!

Though we have been somewhat quiet lately, Strike! organized a banner drop at the Santa Rosa Junior College primary campus. You can read all about it in the Press Democrat. Excerpt:
Members of a youth organization called Strike! displayed three large banners protesting budget cuts at Santa Rosa Junior College on Monday, the first day of the fall semester.

“WTF! Where's The Funding?” was emblazoned on the banner attached to the second-floor railing in front of the Frank P. Doyle Library at 11:45 a.m. as hundreds of students walked through and milled in the area.

“I like it,” said Mara McLeester of Santa Rosa, who said she's been working toward a nursing degree for six years and had trouble enrolling in prerequisite classes, such as math and chemistry, because of the cuts.

Strike intends to follow up this activity in the future with other protests and events that further publicise education funding cuts. If you have any questions or comments about Strike, don't be shy! E-mail us!

Youth Assembly II, May 28

From here to the Middle East, young people are rising up, taking action, and transforming the world! In California, everyone has been affected by outrageous budget cuts in our schools. It's time for the youth to take back control of our education and put these budget cuts to a halt!

Get angry people!!! Over the last three years, 50 % of the funds for K-12 schools in California have been cut (that’s $3,000 per student!). At the same time, community colleges (like SRJC) have lost $1.2 billion, while fees have gone from less than $11 per unit, to $36 per unit by next fall. In the last ten years, state schools (like Sonoma State) have seen a 290% increase in student fees. The list goes on...

Join us for a Youth Assembly
on May 28th, 12-3pm at the Arlene Francis Theater
in Santa Rosa
to discuss the issues that affect our lives, come up with demands and visions for a better world, and build a movement to bring us closer to our goals. It is imperative that these issues are addressed so get active and fight back!!!!!

It's free to get in and there will be free food, drinks, and literature.

Pass the word along and invite all your friends!!! See you on May 28th!

In solidarity,
Strike! Hella Youth Organizing for Power
